Description:

One owner unit, purchased new in July 2008. Very low hours (50-60 at most). Electronically it is basically the NAD Master Series M5 without the fancy brushed aluminum faceplate.

What makes this unit truly outstanding, besides its versatility (it plays everything except the rare DVD-Audio disc) is that it uses true discrete DSD D to A converters for all channels of SACD playback. I believe it is the only unit near this price that does that. So unlike most other recent universal or multi-format units like the Oppo BDP-83 that do all conversions through one D to A path, the NAD separates SACD from DVD and CD.

Its’ sound performance rivals units that cost 3 times the price. The Redbook CD playback is enhanced by the HDCD capability, another rare feature in a reasonably priced component.

Sam Tellig of Stereophile did several articles back in 2009 where he reviewed a sister components of the T-585 and was really excited about the level of engineering and performance that goes into these NAD components. He felt that they outperform many audiophile “name brands” and don’t get the respect that they deserve.

Features, starting with audio and continuing to the video are as follows:

SACD playback, both stereo and multi-channel. CD playback with HDCD (for CDs with that additional feature). DVD playback in Dolby Digital or DTS. In addition the digital audio output can send anything from standard Redbook 16 bit/44.1 kHz to 24 bit and 192 kHz via HDMI, depending on the disc format carrier signal to an outboard DAC or home theater processor or receiver.

DVD video performance is outstanding using Faroudja’s DCDi chip for upscaling to 1080i. It has a complete flexibility of video outputs as well, from HDMI to VGA and everything in between (see below). As mentioned above the digital section decodes Dolby Digital and DTS formats.

Audio/Video Outputs are as follows:
Audio
1 set, 2 channel stereo
1 set, 5.1 channel SACD/DVD (left/right front & surround, center and subwoofer)
1 Coaxial digital (SPDIF)
1 Optical digital (Toslink)
Video
1 HDMI
1 Component Video
1 S Video
1 Composite
1 VGA (for direct computer monitor) very handy if you don’t want to use a TV to access the GUI menus
Additional features
12v remote trigger for on/off
And really nice large sorbothane like feet for vibration damping without after market tweaks.

The unit’s cosmetic condition is “as new” as I can’t find any marks on it anywhere. I have all the original box, manual and remote, all in excellent condition and you get everything I got including the packing bags for the manual, power cord and box for the remote. I will cover ground shipping in the continental U.S. with insurance and signature delivery confirmation.

To answer the inevitable question of “If it so great, why are you selling it?” I purchased it to add multi-channel SACD playback to the Home Theater system but no one used it except me for an occasional album (my primary listening is a separate stereo setup with SACD), everyone else in the family used the Blu-ray player. So I’ve decided to let it go while it is still in “as new” condition.
